Background

I set up the David Border Consultancy in 1993 as a vehicle to carry out consultancies in anaerobic digestion, commercial-scale composting, and other microbiology-based technologies. The company has worked with organic waste producers, composters, anaerobic digestion facilities, universities, Local Authorities and Government Departments.

I have carried out consultancy work in the UK, USA, Holland, Italy, Sri Lanka and Malawi. For many years I have been a lecturer and writer on matters relating to commercial organic waste composting, compost product development, anaerobic digestion, and microalgae.

I attend international conferences on composting, anaerobic digestion, microalgae, and other technologies used to process organic materials.

I have three particular interests:
–  integrating the technologies of composting, anaerobic digestion and the cultivation of microalgae in a biorefinery model
–  developing new products from the greenhouse gases methane and carbon dioxide.
–  explaining technical subjects in a clear and understandable way.

Capabilities

Feasibility studies
Feasibility studies on a number of biology-based technologies such as commercial composting, anaerobic digestion and microalgae cultivation and use.

Selection of best practice technologies.
The selection of composting, anaerobic digestion and microalgae cultivation systems and equipment on the basis of technical, environmental, marketing and financial restraints.

Design, operation, optimisation
The design, operation and optimisation of windrow, aerated static pile and in-vessel (IVC) composting systems and the manufacture of high-value organic products.

Composting a wide variety of feedstocks
The commercial-scale composting of MSW fines, green waste, source-separated food waste, commercial organic wastes, Category 3 organics wastes, anaerobic digestates, agricultural wastes and biosolids.

Markets for compost and digestate
Developing, trialling and marketing of waste-derived composts and digestates in horticulture and agriculture.

Project management
The management of major composting research projects.

Technology analysis
Industry and technology analyses including detailed literature surveys and comparative assessments of technologies and products.
